General Information about course
Venue and Time
The normal venue for evening lectures is the Boyd Orr building, University of Glasgow, Hillhead. Evening sessions usually start on a Wednesday evening at 7.30pm (although some may occasionally be held on other evenings when speakers cannot make a wednesday). A few of the evening sessions may be held in Edinburgh, usually the Western Infirmary. Whole day sessions are held in a range of venues at the Hillhead campus (usually 9.30 - 4.30) but the specific rooms may even change from morning to afternoon. Please note that some of these rooms are not easy to locate! For practical sessions students are often asked to meet inside the Biomedical sciences building (see links above).
Provisional Dates
The normally runs from early November until late February.
Please note that the following dates are as below. Although we have checked, please inform us as soon as possible if the whole day sessions overlap with hospital changeovers.
First evening session: Wed 12th November 2009 7.30 pm (repeats weekly thereafter)
Whole day block 1: Tue24th/Wed 25th/Thurs 26th November (no evening session this week)
Whole day block 2: Monday 25th - Friday 29th January (no evening session this week)
Please remember that the London practical sessions normally take place in March (see later)
Course Fees
In order for the course to be viable it is necessary to charge a fee to students.. Please note that this does not include exam fees, details of which are available from the Royal College of Physicians (London) website, or any practical tuition fees in London (see later). The fees for 2009-10 will be as follows:
Please note that fees are not repayable after the second meeting of the course. In the event that a student who has paid fee group 1 decides not to enter there exam it is their responsibility to "swap" this place with another student who wishes to sit the exam. We are not able to arrange this on behalf of the students involved. The first evening session will be an introduction to the way the course functions.
Please note that a few medical students will be attending parts of the course as a Student Selected Module in International Primary Care. Medical students may give short presentations on the course.
Course content
As a part time course it is not possible for us to cover in detail every aspect of the extensive DTMH curriculum. Students are required to undertake considerable private study to prepare for the exam. Nevertheless, none of our students have ever failed the DTMH examination. The practical component is accespted to be the hardest part of the DTMH exam (and especially so for students who are not on a full time course). Although laboratory training is provided on the Glasgow course, we are not able to cover certain practical components (e.g. histopathology). In previous years students have arranged additional practical tuition courtesy of the London School (normally two days in March). For many students without laboratory experience this additional training has proved invaluable. This is an informal arrangement with London and may include a fee. Unfortunately, the specific dates of the London practical training days may not be known until after xmas. We appreciate that this may make it difficult for students to plan study leave, but it is beyond our control.
Please note that the course does not include any patient contact.
Students should expect that, on occasions, there will be overlap between what speakers cover in their talks. Although we have never had to cancel a lecture at short notice, this is of course possible and students should check their emails on the afternoon of an evening session.
One afternnoon session will be combined with a university meeting on ethnic minority healthcare in Glasgow.
Student Forum
The student forum ("moodle") is a key part of the course and serves as the main means of communication with and between students. Students should upload photographs and information about themselves (e.g. current workplace and reason for interest in tropical medicine). Some copies of presentations are included on the forum. These must not be shared outwith the course. Students should, however, also bring along memory sticks to meetings as it is not always possible for us to put talks on the forum.
Please note that information/messages added to the forum will be accessed by future years' DTMH students.
Application Form
The Application form is available from the main university DTMH webpage (see links at top of page). Please ensure that the form has the correct year.
Couse Evaluation
Students should complete the online feedback form on the forum after each talk/practical.
Please note that it is the student's responsibility to apply for the exam place at the Royal College (for which a separate fee is due)
